Product Overview

What makes
great almonds?

The almond ( Prunus dulcis ) is native to the Middle East and South Asia, but today California produces over 80% of the world's supply — making it the definitive global almond origin. Spain is the second largest producer, offering distinct regional varieties with a slightly more intense, complex flavour profile preferred in confectionery applications.

Almonds are the most nutritionally dense of all tree nuts, containing the highest Vitamin E content of any nut alongside significant quantities of protein, calcium, magnesium, and riboflavin. This nutritional profile, combined with their culinary versatility, has made almonds one of the fastest-growing ingredients across health food, sports nutrition, plant-based, and confectionery categories.

Dense Origins supplies almonds in multiple formats — raw whole, blanched whole, sliced, slivered, and halved — enabling food manufacturers to source the exact specification required without unnecessary processing steps. All formats are available with full traceability and third-party CoA.

Applications

Where they're
used

Almond Milk & Plant-Based Dairy

The most widely used nut for plant-based milk globally. Blanched almonds produce a clean, neutral-flavoured milk base. Dense Origins supplies food-grade blanched almonds in bulk for plant-based dairy manufacturers.

Confectionery & Patisserie

Almonds are indispensable in confectionery — from pralines and nougat to marzipan and macarons. Sliced and slivered formats add texture and visual appeal to premium chocolate and pastry products.

Almond Flour & Gluten-Free Baking

Ground blanched almonds produce almond flour — the cornerstone ingredient of gluten-free and keto baking. Rich, moist texture and superior flavour compared to most GF flour alternatives.

Nut Butters & Spreads

Almond butter is one of the fastest-growing segments in the health food market. Dense Origins supplies raw or roasted almonds suitable for butter and spread production at food manufacturer scale.

Sports & Health Nutrition

High protein (21g/100g), calcium, magnesium, and Vitamin E make almonds a staple ingredient in protein bars, trail mixes, energy balls, and sports nutrition formulations targeting health-conscious consumers.

Cosmetic & Personal Care

Sweet almond oil (cold-pressed from kernels) is widely used in skincare as an emollient and carrier oil. Almond meal is used in natural exfoliating scrubs and face mask formulations.

Calcium Content

At 264mg calcium per 100g, almonds are one of the best plant-based sources of calcium — making them a critical ingredient for plant-based dairy formulations targeting calcium equivalency claims.

Myths
Debunked

Myth

"Almonds are fattening and should be eaten sparingly."

Fact

Studies consistently show that almond consumption is associated with lower body weight, not higher. The fibre, protein, and fat combination increases satiety; some almond fat passes through the gut unabsorbed. Clinical evidence supports almonds as a weight management-friendly food when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

Myth

"All almonds are the same regardless of variety."

Fact

Almond varieties differ significantly in shell thickness, skin texture, kernel size, flavour intensity, and suitability for processing. Nonpareil blanches easily due to its thin skin; Mission produces a more intense flavour valued in confectionery. Choosing the right variety for your application matters.

Myth

"Almonds sold in Europe must come from Europe."

Fact

California produces over 80% of the world's almond supply and is the benchmark quality origin globally. European confectionery manufacturers — including premium Spanish and Italian producers — routinely source California Nonpareil almonds. Dense Origins facilitates this supply chain with full export documentation.

Myth

"Blanching destroys almond nutrition."

Fact

The blanching process (brief hot water treatment to remove the skin) has minimal impact on almond macronutrients and most micronutrients. The brown skin does contain some polyphenols, but the kernel retains its protein, healthy fats, Vitamin E, calcium, and magnesium content in full.

Product FAQ

Common Questions

What sizes are available for whole almonds?

Whole almonds are graded by count per ounce. Common commercial sizes are 18/20 (largest), 20/22, 23/25, 25/27, 27/30, and 30/32 (smallest whole). Nonpareil almonds are typically graded 23/25 or 25/27. We can supply to your specified size range with CoA confirmation.

Are your almonds pasteurised?

All California almonds sold commercially are required by the Almond Board of California to undergo a mandatory pasteurisation treatment (either steam pasteurisation or propylene oxide treatment for non-organic). Steam pasteurised almonds are labelled as "raw" and are suitable for organic certification. We supply steam pasteurised (not PPO-treated) almonds.

Can you supply almond flour?

Yes, almond flour (finely ground blanched almonds) is available. We can specify fineness/mesh size. Almond meal (ground with skin) is also available. Both are suitable for gluten-free baking, macarons, and frangipane applications. Please specify when enquiring.

What certifications are available for organic almonds?

Our organic almonds are certified under USDA National Organic Program (NOP) standards. EU Organic equivalent certification documentation is available. Organic almonds are available in raw and blanched whole formats. Please enquire for current organic availability and minimum quantities.
